"I don't know the specifics."
Cheatle would not directly answer how many USSS agents were there that day as well as a myriad of other questions. When asked by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) repeatedly about "how many times" the USSS had denied requests from the Trump campaign she could not give a straight answer.
Cheatle repeatedly dodged the question and said that she "did not know the specifics" on the different instances of the USSS denying requests for additional security for the Trump campaign. There were a number of failures leading up to the Trump rally on July 13, where there was an assassination attempt on Trump by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.
Cheatle said that "on July 13, [USSS] failed" when it came to the mission of the agency to protect the nation's leaders, during her opening statements.
USSS Director Cheatle testified before the House Oversight Committee. Chairman James Comer opened the hearing by honoring Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old father and husband who was fatally shot during the assassination attempt. Comperatore had been shielding his wife and daughters when he was shot at the rally.
Comer said that the USSS has a "zero fail mission" that failed during the Trump rally. He added that "Americans deserve accountability" for answers from the agency. He said that Cheatle should resign during his opening statement to the hearing. "Before we are Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans," Comer said, adding that political violence has no place in America and that division needs to be curbed.
