Attorneys for 2024 GOP frontrunner Donald Trump are in Washington, DC this morning meeting with Special Counsel Jack Smith in anticipation of possible charges stemming from the events of January 6, 2021, and alleged 2020 election interference.

According to Fox News, the grand jury is also meeting today at a federal courthouse in the city.

Earlier this month, Trump said he had received a letter from Smith stating that he is a "target of the January 6th grand jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the grand jury, which almost always means an arrest and indictment."

The Biden administration, Trump alleged in the Truth Social post, has "effectively issued a third Indictment and Arrest of Joe Biden's number one political opponent."

Smith and his team have been investigating possible charges in regards to whether Trump or other officials interfered with the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 presidential election, including the certification of the Electoral College vote on January 6, 2021.

On January 6, 2021, Trump supporters entered the US Capitol building during the joint session of Congress. Over 1,000 people have been charged by the Department of Justice in connection to the events of that day.

Smith has also indicted Trump on charges related to the alleged improper retention of classified documents after his term ended at Mar-a-Lago. Trump has pleaded not guilty to the 37 charges, stating that the documents retained were covered under the Presidential Records Act.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
