ROME, Georgia — Former President Donald Trump went to Georgia for a campaign rally on Saturday. During his speech, held as a dueling rally to President Joe Biden, Trump slammed the president for apologizing for calling Laken Riley's suspected murderer an "illegal" immigrant.

"He was an illegal alien, he was an illegal immigrant," Trump told the large crowd about Jose Ibarra, who has been charged with murder of the Georgia nursing student.

"He shouldn’t have been in our country and he never would have been under the Trump policy," the former president added.

Rally attendees held signs of Riley during Trump’s speech.

“Laken Riley would be alive today if Joe Biden had not willfully and maliciously eviscerated the borders of the United States and set loose thousands and thousands of dangerous criminals into our country," Trump also added.

The comments about Riley stemmed from Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday where he referred to Jose Ibarra, the suspected murderer of Riley, as an “illegal” immigrant.

Biden also called the deceased nursing student, “Lincoln Riley,” which quickly stirred backlash among many in the country, up to and including Riley's mother

"If you are going to say her name (even when forced to do so) at least say the right name!" the mother wrote in a Facebook post.

The president than apologized on Saturday, ahead of his own rally in Georgia, in an interview on MSNBC where he said, “I shouldn't have used 'illegal.' It's undocumented,” referring to Ibarra.

Ibarra, who is reportedly a member of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua gang, was a repeat offender and was also released by authorities after he had been detained for crossing the border illegally. He was released because the detainment centers did not have enough space in Sept. 2022.
