President Donald Trump was indicted Thursday by a grand jury convened in New York by DA Alvin Bragg, and faces at least one felony charge as a result.
Bragg has not released the charges, though it is believed that he has determined to raise mindemeanor charges of falsifying records to the felony level, with the idea that those alleged crimes were the foundation of further crimes.
It has been speculated that those alleged further crimes would be regarding election interference or campaign finance issues.
The misemeanor charges stem from alleged payments made by Trump's lawyer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels, with whom he is alleged to have had an affair. Those payments, it has been alleged, were then recorded as legal fees by the Trump administration, though evidence from Cohen suggests that Trump either did not reimbuse the $130,000 paid to Daniels, or did not reimburse it until long after the 2016 presidential election.
The basis for an election interference claim would be that the payments constituted an illegal campaign donation to Trump's presidential campaign by the Trump organization in that the alleged payoff would have been a help to the campaign by suppressing information that would have made Americans switch their vote from Trump to Hillary.
Trump happens to be the top political opponent of current president Joe Biden.
