President Donald Trump has said that Mexico will not have to pay a tariff on all goods that fall under the USMCA (United States, Mexico, Canada) trade agreement until April 2, when the agreement expires.

Trump posted on Truth Social, "After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement."

"This Agreement is until April 2nd. I did this as an accommodation, and out of respect for, President Sheinbaum. Our relationship has been a very good one, and we are working hard, together, on the Border, both in terms of stopping Illegal Aliens from entering the United States and, likewise, stopping Fentanyl. Thank you to President Sheinbaum for your hard work and cooperation!" Trump added.

The announcement from Trump comes after he has pressured both Mexico as well as Canada to better enforce their borders with the US to stop illegal immigration as well as the smuggling of fentanyl. On Tuesday, the Trump administration launched a 25 percent tariff on all goods being imported to the US from Mexico as well as Canada, with the exception of energy in Canada getting a tariff of 10 percent.

On Tuesday, Trump's Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, said that he was on the phone with "both the Mexicans and the Canadians" on Tuesday where the countries were "trying to show that they'll do better" and suggested that the tariffs might get rolled back soon.

Then on Wednesday, Trump granted an exemption on tariffs in the car industry for Mexico as well as Canada for a month, according to CNN. "At the request of the companies associated with USMCA, the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they’re not at an economic disadvantage," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

On Thursday, Lutnick said that it is "likely" that the relief on goods covered by USMCA will also be going to Canada for the month, but Trump did not make mention of the country in the statement rolling back the tariffs on all goods covered by USMCA.

“It’s likely that it will cover all USMCA compliant goods and services, so that which is part of President Trump’s deal with Canada and Mexico are likely to get an exemption from these tariffs," Lutnick remarked in an interview with CNBC.
