Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump signaled that a deal with Iran to end the ongoing war could come as soon as this weekend, and that Vice President JD Vance may travel to Europe for the signing.
"The Strait [of Hormuz] would officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend. In Europe, I won't be able to be there, but JD will be there, vice president, and some of the people," Trump said.
This comes after Trump had said on Thursday morning that the US would be striking Iran "very hard" on Thursday night, and that US forces would be "taking Khard Island, and other infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela."
However, later the same day, Trump said that the strikes were called off. Trump wrote, "Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening."
