"I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED."
Trump posted on Truth Social, "Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely 'pounding' Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!"
This comes as Trump has been working with both countries to reach a peace agreement. The statement from Trump comes on the heels of a meeting that went sideways between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
After the meeting, the relationship between the US as well as Ukraine was stressed. After a few days where Zelensky said he would not be apologizing over the meeting, arguing that the United States should be offering explicit security guarantees, Trump said that he would be pausing all aid to Ukraine.
The day after, the Ukrainian leader posted on X, “Our meeting in Washington, at the White House on Friday, did not go the way it was supposed to be. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive. Regarding the agreement on minerals and security, Ukraine is ready to sign it in any time and in any convenient format. We see this agreement as a step toward greater security and solid security guarantees, and I truly hope it will work effectively."
Later that day, Trump announced during his speech to Congress that the US and Ukraine would be signing the mineral deal, which is widely seen as a stepping stone to getting security guarantees for Ukraine in the region, as US economic interests would be vested in the safety of the country.
Later in the week, Russia launched a series of rocket as well as drone attacks in Ukraine, according to the Guardian. This came the day after the US reportedly stopped sharing intelligence with Kyiv.
