On Monday, Trump halted military aid to Ukraine. This comes after a disastrous Oval Office meeting on Friday, during which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky talked over Trump, got into an argument with Vice President JD Vance, refused to sign a rare earth minerals deal without security guarantees, and said explicitly that if the US didn't continue to fund the war in Ukraine, Americans would "feel it."
"US intelligence cooperation," the Financial Times reports, "has been essential for Ukraine's ability to identify and strike Russian military targets." While Biden had permitted American intelligence to be used to aid Ukraine in striking Russian targets, the administration had declined to allow American weapons to be used to strike targets deep within Russia. Zelensky had been pushing that administration for months to allow him to do just that. Now, he and his military will be unable to use the missile systems precisely at all.
The Financial Times spoke to "officials famliar with the decision" who "confirmed that Washington had frozen intelligence channels with Kyiv." CIA Director John Ratcliff has said "Trump had a real question about whether President Zelensky was committed to the peace process, and he said let’s pause." Trump had said that Zelensky "doesn't want peace" if he can keep getting funding for the war.
Trump had issued a post on Truth Social after he kicked Zelensky and the Ukrainian delegation out of the White House on Friday, saying that he did not believe Zelensky was committed to peace. Zelensky headed straight to the UK, where he met with British PM Kier Starmer, who promised troops and aid. Zelensky then said that he was ready to sign the minerals deal.
US allies, per the Financial times, have been told not to share intelligence with Kyiv, however, "two officials said that recipients with assets inside the country were likely to continue passing on relevant intelligence to Kyiv."
One official said "If they don’t reverse it soon, it will become really difficult for the Ukrainians because it takes away their battlefield advantage." The war began in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. From the start, the Biden administration worked to fund the war, not to gain peace.
