President Donald Trump announced that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. This comes after Giuliani was involved in a car accident over the weekend.

In a statement posted to social media, Trump called Giuliani “the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot.” He said details on the ceremony’s time and location will be released later.

"As President of the United States of America, I am pleased to announce that Rudy Giuliani, the greatest Mayor in the history of New York City, and an equally great American Patriot, will receive THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDAL OF FREEDOM, our Country’s highest civilian honor. Details as to time and place to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!" Trump wrote in the statement to Truth Social.

The announcement comes as Giuliani recovers in a New Hampshire hospital after a serious car accident on August 30 left him with a fractured vertebrae, multiple lacerations, and injuries to his left arm and leg.

According to a spokesperson, Giuliani was hurt shortly after stopping to help a domestic violence victim. “Mayor Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was a victim of domestic violence prior to the accident. He rendered assistance and contacted 911, remaining on scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety,” the spokesperson said.

The accident occurred after Giuliani re-entered his vehicle, which was struck from behind at high speed. He was transported to a trauma center in Manchester, where doctors expect him to remain for two to three days. He will need to wear a brace during recovery.

“The mayor is in great spirits. He’s a beast. He survived 9/11,” the spokesperson said.

Maria Ryan, Giuliani’s business partner and a nurse, has been assisting with his medical care and said further evaluations are underway. “He’s getting further tests and stabilization of his injuries,” Ryan said.

The full statement issued on his condition confirmed the extent of his injuries, including a fractured thoracic vertebrae and multiple contusions. It also noted that his business partner and medical provider were promptly contacted and arrived at the hospital to oversee his treatment.
