BREAKING: Two US soldiers, one civilian killed during ISIS attack in Syria

Two US soldiers were killed as well as one US citizen who was serving as an interpreter in Syria on Saturday, according to Pentagon officials. Shots were fired at US and Syrian forces during an attack from an ISIS gunman during an engagement with country officials. 

"Today in Palmyra, Syria, two United States Army soldiers and one civilian U.S. interpreter were killed, and three were wounded. The attack occurred as the soldiers were conducting a key leader engagement. Their mission was in support of on-going counter-ISIS / counter-terrorism operations in the region. The soldiers’ names, as well as identifying information about their units, are being withheld until 24 hours after the next of kin notification. This attack is currently under active investigation," Sean Parnell said in a post to X.

"The savage who perpetrated this attack was killed by partner forces. Let it be known, if you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you," Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said.

The US has hundreds of troops in Syria as part of a coalition to combat ISIS. US Central Command said that the attack was carried out by a "lone ISIS gunman" in the country. "The gunman was engaged and killed," the statement added. 

"As a matter of respect for the families and in accordance with Department of War policy, the identities of the service members will be withheld until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified. Updates will be provided as they become available," Central Command added in a statement.
