Britney Spears' father, Jamie Spears, filed a petition in court Tuesday to end his daughter's conservatorship after being in full control of the 39-year-old pop star's finances since 2009.
The two have been battling in court over the past few years as the "...Baby One More Time" singer plead to end her conservatorship which began following multiple involuntary holds. Jamie said he would step down from the conservatorship when the timing was "right" and a "smooth transition" could occur.
Although legal battles have been going on for years and advocates have been campaigning to "Free Britney," the singers battle has only recently began to spark national interest when she decided to appear in court for the first time and The New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears was released.
"As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter," the court document stated, which was obtained by the AP. "If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance."
The petition will need approval from Judge Brenda Penny who oversees the case, AP reports.
Tuesday's court filing quoted an "impassioned plea" that the pop star gave on June 23 in court to end the legal arrangement.
"I just want my life back," Spears said. "And it's been 13 years and it's enough. It's been a long time since I've owned my money. And it's my wish and my dream for all of this to end without being tested."
The court documents note that Britney Spears said she was unaware that she could file a petition to end the conservatorship and that Judge Penny's recent decision to allow the singer to select Mathew Rosengart as her attorney demonstrates that the court trusts her to make her own decisions.
According to the filings, evidence shows that Spears has "demonstrated a level of independence" by partaking in activities like driving on her own in southern California.
After the most recent court battle, Britney Spears accused Jamie of "conservatorship abuse" and said she wanted to press charges against her father. Spears has attempted to have her father removed as her conservator multiple times.
Spears' attorney was set to file a petition in court on Sept. 29 to remove Jamie from the conservatorship at the next hearing in the case, according to AP.
