Canadian singer Bryan Adams has released an anti-Donald Trump protest song titled “51st State” for Canada Day.
Adams, who is best known for hits such as “Summer of ’69,” “Heaven,” and “Everything I Do (I Do It for You),” released the song as a way to unify Canadians against the US president, who has previously joked about making Canada the next American state. Adams does not live in Canada, but instead in the UK.
The lyrics read, “Let me give it to you straight/ When you’re talking about my home/ You better show some respect/ Cuz up here we take care of our own/ So let me give you some advice mister/ You might have too much on your plate/ Go’n load us up with tariffs/ But we’ll never be the 51st State.”
“For the working man it’s easier together/ We’re way better hand in hand/ But the 49th parallel has become a line drawn in the sand,” Adams' lyrics added.
Adams has not been the only public figure to respond to Trump’s jokes about integrating Canada into the US. Last year, comedian Mike Myers appeared alongside Prime Minister Mark Carney in a TV ad wearing a jersey that read “never 51.” He also appeared on Saturday Night Live, where he wore a T-shirt that said: “Canada is not for sale.”
At the height of trade tensions and tariff disputes at the start of Trump’s second term, the “51st state” comments resurface periodically, prompting repeated responses from Canadian officials. Carney, at one point, reached out to Trump to request that he stop making the jokes.
“I’ve been clear throughout on behalf of Canadians—this will never happen. Canada is not for sale and never will be for sale,” Carney said at the time.
