U-Haul recently released a report which showed that there is a severe shortage of vehicles available for customers moving out of California and fleeing for the free states of Texas and Florida due to sharply-increased demand.

The report, which found that migration to southern states continued throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, indicated that the majority of moves using the company's services was to Texas, the top destination. California and Illinois ranked as the states with the greatest one-way net loss of U-Haul trucks, according to the report.

Other states that are prime destinations for internal migration include Florida and Tennessee, which were the No. 1 destinations in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The Lone Star State was back in the top spot for 2021, according to Fox Business.

The results of the U-Haul report are not a surprise for Matt Merill, the U-Haul area district vice president for the Dallas-Fort-Worth Metroplex and West Texas. "We see a lot of growth coming from the East and West Coast," he said.

"A lot of people moving here from California (and) New York. We also see a lot of people coming in from the Chicago markets," Merill argued. "I think that’s a lot due to the job growth – a lot of opportunity here. The cost of living here is much lower than those areas. Texas is open for business."

The U-Haul report went on to detail the fact that the numbers of migrants leaving California would be even higher, but, at multiple times, the moving company was simply out of vehicles and had to turn customers away.
