BREAKING: Canadian soldier fatally shot in live-fire training exercise

A Canadian Army soldier has died as the result of a gunshot wound sustained while training at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alta.

A Canadian soldier has died as the result of a gunshot wound sustained while training at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alta. The Department of National Defence has released a statement.

The release describes the incident in detail. "The incident occurred in the CFB Wainwright training area at approximately 10 p.m. on Oct. 30. The soldier was participating in a live fire training exercise when the incident occurred. The soldier was immediately treated at the scene and evacuated to a nearby hospital in Wainwright, Alta. The soldier was then transported by air to a hospital in Edmonton, Alta. where, unfortunately, they succumbed to the injury the morning of Oct. 31."

The live-fire training has been suspended and an investigation is underway.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen soldier. The Canadian Armed Forces will be there to support the family during this difficult time," said the Department of National Defence in their release.

The deceased soldier’s next of kin have been notified. The identity of the deceased is being withheld as National Defence is confirming the wishes of the family.
