Almost three-in-four Canadians say that the Trudeau Liberals should leave the abortion issue alone rather than reopening the debate, but nearly eight-in-10 say that the Liberals should move to protect abortion laws, reports Maru Public Opinion.
The poll, which was conducted in released during the ongoing fallout of the leaked US Supreme Court draft decision, shows that 72 percent of Canadians believe abortion laws should be left as is in Canada, reports the National Post.
11 percent say that the government should revisit the issue and the question of there being no limits to Canada's abortion laws. Nine percent said they don't care about the issue, while 8 percent said they don't know what the government should do.
Seventeen percent of Atlantic Canadians said that the debate should be reopened, followed by 15 percent in Alberta, 13 percent in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, 12 percent in Ontario, eight percent in Quebec, and seven percent in British Columbia.
In all, 88 percent of Quebecers supprt introducing laws to protect abortion, followed by 83 percent in BC, 77 in Ontario, 71 in the Atlantic provinces, and 65 in the prairie provinces. 50 percent say that abortion rights in Canada are under threat because of the US's Supreme Court's draft. 73 percent say that women should be able to get an abortion "no matter what the reason," with 21 percent saying that abortion should be legal only in some circumstances.
