A Chicago police officer was shot and killed Wednesday evening on the city’s South Side while responding to a domestic incident.
According to Supt. David Brown, the officer was shot at approximately 4:45 pm in the 5200 block of South Spaulding Avenue in the city’s Gage Park neighborhood.
WGN9 reported that the officer was responding to a domestic incident with a person with a gun and the caller said a person was chasing someone with a gun.
Brown said that one responding officer knocked on the door while the other officer chased the offender, who was armed with a gun and shots were exchanged between the offender and the officer. That’s when the officer who gave chase, whose name hasn’t been released, was shot multiple times.
The officer was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where he later died. According to Brown, the officer leaves behind a wife and family internationally.
Brown said, “This young officer, who had five years with the department, had a bright future ahead of him and this is something that no family should have to face."
The 18-year-old suspect was shot in the head and taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Brown stated, “What we know about the offender is that he is 18 years old, not much of a criminal history. One prior violation that we’ve been able to find this evening.”
“Policing is a big family of people who know, at some point, that they may be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice, but you never wish or hope that it actually happens,” Brown added. “And tonight, this tragedy did. There are some broken hearts that will take a long time to grieve and accept this.”
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot coming off her recent re-election defeat after Chicago residents pushed back on her demonization of the police and crime-enabling policies, asked people to thank an officer if they see them in order to offer support. “Every single day on every shift, officers run to danger for our safety,” Lightfoot said. “If you see an officer tonight or the next day or the day after that, thank them for their service. They need our thanks they need our support and they need to know that everyone in our city has their backs.”
Brown said the officer’s name isn’t being released as the family works to let family members know out of the country.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said in a tweet, “Our hearts mourn the loss of the Chicago Police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice tonight. My deepest sympathies are with the officer’s family, friends, and colleagues at this difficult time. His service will not be forgotten.”
