Since the Biden Institute was established in 2017 at the University of Delaware, it has been revealed that China, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Turkey have donated millions of dollars to the school.
Since the institute’s founding, the school has received $23,610,996 from Saudi Arabia, $6,704,250 from China, $2,513,646 from Oman, and $1,673,847 from Turkey, according to the Washington Free Beacon, which conducted a review of US Department of Education records.
The Biden Institute, President Joe Biden’s domestic policy think tank led by his sister Valerie, was established by the University of Delaware’s Joseph R. Biden Jr. School of Public Policy & Administration.
The news of international funding comes as lawmakers have called for an investigation into whether Biden had held classified documents at the University of Delaware, after classified documents were discovered at the Penn Biden Center in DC as well as Biden’s Wilmington, Delaware home.
Senator Ted Cruz called in late January for the FBI and Department of Justice to search 1,875 boxes of records that were donated to the University of Delaware in 2012 by Biden, which are closed to the public.
Cruz said in a January 23 podcast that officials need to know if any "additional classified documents are in those records."
"Given Biden’s pattern, we should have zero reason [to] have any confidence that there are not multiple classified documents," Cruz said.
While the University of Delaware has previously declined to disclose the Biden Institute’s donors, government watchdogs have raised concerns over whether any foreign funds have gone to the think tank, which has employed some of Biden’s top aides and political allies.
"The secrecy surrounding the suspected foreign funding of the Biden Institute at the University of Delaware is on a par with that of the Penn Biden Center of the University of Pennsylvania," Paul Kamenar, counsel to the National Legal and Policy Center, told the Washington Free Beacon. "The House oversight committees need to uncover the dark money sources in both cases, particularly from China."
House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Michael McCaul launched an inquiry in January into foreign funding of the University of Pennsylvania. According to the Washington Free Beacon, the university has received $61 million from Chinese funders in the three years since the Penn Biden Center was established.
The university has accepted an additional $14 million from unnamed donors in China and Hong Kong since Biden’s innaugeration, though the school said that donations were not specifically for the think tank, and that the center was funded through the school’s general budget.
