A Conservative MP who was born in Hong Kong has said that he is feeling both “sadness and pride” after the Communist government of China sanctioned him.
Kenny Chiu, who is the Member of Parliament for Steveston-Richmond East in British Columbia, told Richmond News that he feels “a mix of emotions of sadness and pride. Sadness in that it’s my birthplace, and the fact that I have been sanctioned from visiting my birthplace would trouble anybody.”
Chiu went on to say that he had “immense pride in being punished by China for speaking the truth as a parliamentarian.”
The People’s Republic of China introduced sanctions against a number of officials in both Canada and the United States after they spoke up against the treatment of the Uyghur people in China’s Xinjiang province.
Prominent Conservative MP Michael Chong, who serves as the Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs, was explicitly mentioned by the Chinese government in a press release, saying that he was “prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China.”
China has accused these officials of interfering in the country’s internal affairs.
Chong responded on Twitter by saying that if “China sanctions me, I'll wear it as a badge of honour.”
Chong went on to tell CBC News that “these sanctions [would] further rally the global community in taking a stand against these violations."
