On Sunday, an ad promoting Christianity ran during Super Bowl LVII from "He Gets Us," a group aimed at reintroducing "people to the Jesus of the Bible and his confounding love and forgiveness," prompting Democrats online to claim that the advertisement for Christianity is a fascist.
The ad features black and white images of people yelling or getting aggressive toward other people, with the song "Human" by Rag’n’Bone Man playing in the background. As the ad progresses with images of people acting more aggressively and violently with sounds of shouting and police sirens in the background, it cuts to black, with the phrase "Jesus loved the people we hate" being displayed on the screen. "He gets us. All of us," is displayed, the tagline for He Gets Us.
New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, "Something tells me Jesus would *not* spend millions of dollars on Super Bowl ads to make fascism look benign."
"Reminder: The Jesusy 'He Gets Us' campaign is a truly toxic far-right effort—anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion, etc. Ignore the gauzy social justice dressing," wrote Wired and New York Times contributor Virginia Heffernan.
Democratic strategist Sawyer Hackett wrote, "With the money the 'He Gets Us' people spent on their right-wing Jesus ads, they could permanently house 1,563 people experiencing homelessness."
Pastor Hans Fiene replied and wrote, "Right wing Christians are very leery of the 'He Gets Us Campaign,' which is obvious to anyone paying attention. Leftists just assume that anything Jesus-oriented is right wing because their entire political philosophy is motivated by hatred of Christ."
"During the Super Bowl tonight, you’ll see two TV ads promoting Jesus from a company called He Gets Us. Underneath the inclusive-sounding messages is a group funding the right’s efforts to ban abortion & allow businesses to discriminate against the LGBTQ+," wrote Andrew Perez.
"Just FYI, the same group that is financing the 'He Gets Us' Jesus ads is also helping finance the lawsuit seeking to ban abortion medication nationwide," wrote "Accountability Journalist" Judd Legum.
"Specifically, the group behind the ads, The Signatry, also donated $16.7 million to Alliance Defending Freedom. Alliance Defending Freedom is providing legal representation to the plaintiffs in the lawsuit seeking a nationwide ban on abortion medication," Legum added.
The Signatry is a "is a global community and ministry dedicated to creating eternal impact through generosity across generations," according to their website.
According to CNN, the campaign which says "Whatever you are facing, Jesus faced it too" is part of a $100 million media investment to get viewers to return to Christ.
Entrepreneur Patrick Bet-David wrote, "The most powerful Super Bowl commercial. It caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting it to be what it ended up being. Powerful! #HeGetsUs."
"The angry people in the faces of the protestors in those 'He Gets Us' commercials are the ones with 'Christian' in their Twitter bios. Glossy expensive propaganda is still just polished lies paid for by Hobby Lobby working to take away our rights."
Allie Beth Stuckey wrote, "While I pray God uses the He Gets Us ads to bring people to Christ, the campaign presents a false, worldly Jesus instead of pointing people to the true gospel."
