"We didn't lose to Donald Trump. We lost to the couch."
This comes as the Democratic National Committee (DNC) continues to search for the party's identity following four disastrous years of the Biden administration. Politico obtained documents from the DNC's program that show volunteers will be trained to use a "listening first" strategy when engaging with infrequent voters. The approach includes using "active listening" skills while "having difficult conversations about politics."
As the nation heads into midterms, Democratic Party leaders are hoping to earn back trust. "We have to listen to them," DNC chair Ken Martin told Politico. "The Democratic Party is done with waiting until the last minute to engage voters— these conversations need to happen early and often."
The goal is to win over unreliable voters, which was a key strategy used by the Trump campaign in the 2024 presidential election, when the president's team targeted Republicans who were unlikely to vote. Democrats are now following suit. "The work started immediately after we lost, and it was sort of a self-reflection," said DNC deputy executive director Libby Schneider. "This is one of those things that it's a no-brainer that it should live with the DNC, and that we should have been doing it for longer."
"We didn't lose to Donald Trump. We lost to the couch," she continued. "We saw our voters, many of our important voters, stay home. Obviously, that is a trend that cannot continue."
