"We have a moral duty to protect TPS holders and to provide them with protections in a permanent pathway to citizenship."
Several Democratic lawmakers have taken issue with the ruling. Senator Ed Markety (D-MA) held a press conference, where he said that there is a "moral duty" to provide TPS holders a "permanent pathway to citizenship."
Markey told reporters that Trump's policy is racist against Haitians and others who have TPS status. He later added, "We have a moral duty to protect TPS holders and to provide them with protections in a permanent pathway to citizenship. We must make America home for these TPS holders."
He also spoke about prospective legislation, saying that left-wing House member Ayanna Pressley's bill to extend TPS status for Haitians was passed in the House. "That is an inspiration. and now, as soon as we could get back, we are going, Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, and I are going to bring that same bill out onto the floor of the United States Senate to ensure that there is TPS protection for Haitians until the next election," Markey added.
Markey said that the permanent pathway to citizenship should apply to all TPS holders of all countries that have come to the US. After the court decision, Markey, Pressley, and Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz appeared in front of the Supreme Court to stump for extending TPS for Haitians.
Pressley claimed, “Ending TPS for Haitians, ending TPS for Syrians in this ruling endangers all TPS holders, Venezuelans, Hondurans, Ukrainians, and others. The implications of this ruling are nothing short of catastrophic.”
Wasserman Schultz said at the time, "The mission to protect our law-abiding neighbors from ICE brutality and provide a lawful pathway to permanent status has never been more urgent, and I will continue working tirelessly to achieve those goals."
