The man accused of killing five people, including himself, in a recent car crash on a Denver highway had a lengthy criminal history dating back to 2013 and was out on parole.

Walter Huling, 31, slammed into a Ford sedan on Monday after swerving into oncoming traffic while driving a stolen Toyota Matrix hatchback. Huling, who was killed in the crash, fatally struck four people in the sedan, including three juveniles.

Court documents obtained by Denver7 show that Huling was a repeat offender with an extensive criminal history. He had been arrested at least 16 times since 2013 on charges including assault, false reporting, bribery, burglary, contempt of court, driving under the influence, parole violation, and several other assaults.

Huling was sentenced in 2019 to six years in prison related to a downtown Denver assault, where he attacked a man, rendering him unconscious, and then assaulted the man's wife. He then physically attacked a police officer who took him into custody, according to court records.

George Brauchler, district attorney for Judicial District 23, told the network that the tragedy seemed "like we are failing the community," citing Huling's lengthy criminal history "and the fact that he appears to have been on parole."

"I mean, it's an 11-page criminal history that dates back to when this guy was a juvenile," said Brauchler.

The victims killed in the sedan have been identified as Alvin Corado, 35, Toretto Corado, 8, Makenlee Corado, 12, and Jase Green, 12.

Roughly an hour before the crash, law enforcement said that a Toyota Matrix hatchback, the vehicle driven by Hurling, had been reported stolen from RTD's Nine Mile station in Aurora, Colorado.
