The night featured notable addresses from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, both of whom took aim at Trump.
During the second night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, former President Donald Trump’s name was mentioned more frequently by speakers than all top issues combined. If there's one thing that unites the Democrats, it's that they don't like Donald Trump.
The night featured notable addresses from both former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. During his speech Barack Obama took aim at Trump, suggesting that Trump views power merely as a tool for personal gain.
“[Trump] wants the middle class to pay the price for another huge tax cut that would mostly help him and his rich friends,” Obama claimed. “He killed a bipartisan immigration deal that would've helped secure our southern border because he thought trying to actually solve the problem would hurt his campaign. He doesn't seem to care if more women lose their reproductive freedoms since it won't affect his life.”
The Democratic Party’s strategy for the convention appears to be a concerted anti-Trump campaign. This approach was evident on both nights of the convention. On the first night alone, Trump was mentioned 147 times, compared to only 8 mentions of the border crisis and 3 mentions of inflation, according to the Trump campaign.
“Obviously, their convention is about who they are running against rather than what they're running for," said Trump campaign spokesman Brian Hughes.
Trump himself criticized the Democrats’ focus during an appearance on conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt’s show. He denounced the convention's emphasis on him, saying, “It’s pretty sad" and accused the party of being "out of control."
“And they mentioned the economy about five times,” Trump said. “They mentioned the border maybe none. They mentioned crime almost none. So I mean, they’re out of control. These people are out of control. And they’re ruining our nation. Our nation is going to hell.”
