Former second gentleman Doug Emhoff has privately told people that he does not want his wife, former Vice President Kamala Harris, to run for president again in 2028. Emhoff expressed reservations about another presidential campaign, but said he would ultimately support Harris if she decides to run, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Emhoff has publicly supported Harris throughout her political career. In her memoir “107 Days,” Harris detailed the sacrifices her husband has made to support her political ambitions. Emhoff left his job at a law firm to avoid potential conflicts of interest after she became Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020. Emhoff has since returned to work as an attorney in Los Angeles, and the pair live in Malibu.

“He made a huge sacrifice, gladly and without bitterness,” she wrote in the memoir. “He knew it was essential that there be no appearance of conflicts of interest in our new roles. So that was his last day at his law firm.”

Harris has not announced whether she intends to seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008. However, speculation has continued that she may ultimately run.

In July, Harris was asked by Al Sharpton at the National Action Network conference in New York about a potential bid, where she replied, “Listen, I might.”

“I served for four years being a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States. I know what the job is, and I know what it requires,” she added.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has long been speculated as seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said in September he would not run should Harris enter the race.

“I wouldn’t run if she ran,” Newsom told CNN’s Jake Tapper. “I wouldn’t do that to her. I wouldn’t do it to me. I wouldn’t do that to you. I wouldn’t waste everyone’s time.”

A September Harvard-Harris poll found Harris leading the potential Democratic field among registered Democratic voters. Harris received 38 percent, despite a four-point decline from the previous poll. Newsom placed second with 17 percent, followed by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 12 percent.
