"There used to be 3,000 or 4,000 people crossing that area a day. For the past three days, we’ve averaged just 3."
"The area where we have occupied this park in Eagle Pass, Texas, that we put up the razor wire, there used to be 3,000 or 4,000 people crossing that area a day. For the past three days, we’ve averaged just 3 people crossing that area," Abbott told Fox host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.
"More than half of the [state] governors are joined together in support of a very important proposition. And that is we are guaranteed by the United States Constitution the right of self-defense if states face imminent harm or invasion," Abbott also added.
13 of the Republican state governors in support of Texas joined Abbott for a press conference at Shelby Park in Eagle Pass border on Sunday. They included Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Georgia Gov, Brian Kemp, and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, among others.
Abbott said, "President Biden has abandoned his constitutional duty to protect Americans by refusing to secure our southern border."
“During his presidency, Joe Biden has smashed records for illegal immigration and allowed total chaos to be unleashed along our southern border."
Eagle Pass has become a national flashpoint over a legal debate happening between the Biden administration and the Texas governor as the Texas State National Guard has continued to put up the additional security of razor wire at the once heavily traveled spot on the border.
Earlier in January, Abbott, after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of an emergency request from Biden's Department of Homeland Security to remove the razor wire, Abbott released a statement that says based on Article I, Section 10, Clause 3 of the Constitution, Texas has a "right to self-defense" in the face of invasion.
27 states so far have now signaled their support of Texas' actions facing the border crisis.
