New York Representative and House Republican Conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik endorsed former President Donald Trump in his as-yet-unannounced 2024 presidential run this week while speaking to the New York Times.
Stefanik said, "I am proud to endorse Donald Trump for president in 2024. It is time for Republicans to unite around the most popular Republican in America who has a proven track record of conservative governance."
Stefanik, the third highest-ranking Republican in Congress, made the comment as Trump, during a rally on Monday for JD Vance in Ohio, teased a "major announcement" to be made from Mar-A-Lago on November 15.
The announcement comes as the former leader has teased on numerous occasions his intention to run for president in 2024, the frequency of which had only increased as Tuesday's midterm election approached.
Stefanik followed up her initial endorsement with a statement to Brietbart on Thursday and said, "Republican voters determine who is the leader of the Republican Party and it’s very clear President Trump is the leader of the Republican party. What the media fails to report is that we just won the midterms and flipped the House."
As of Friday, the GOP are projected to win the majority in the House of Representatives, although with fewer seats gained than originally projected in the "red wave.".
"We cannot afford another four years of Joe Biden’s failed policies that have led to the inflation crisis, border crisis, and crime crisis. It is time for Republicans to unite around the most popular Republican in America, who has a proven track record of conservative governance," she added.
On November 3, Trump stopped short of formally announcing the run, but stated that "In order to make our country successful and safe and glorious. I will very, very, very probably do it again, okay? Very, very, very probably. Very, very, very probably."
Stefanik finished by noting, "Poll after poll shows that President Trump would defeat any Republican challenger by massive margins, and would beat Joe Biden if the election were held today. President Trump has always put America First, and I look forward to supporting him so we can save America."
