"Someone could claim their money, delete their account & never return. Totally up to them."
On Saturday, Twitter owner Elon Musk said that there are some accounts eligible to receive over $20,000 if they subscribe to Twitter Blue because payments from the Ads Revenue Sharing program are retroactive back to February.
Journalist Brian Krassenstein posted how the new program worked and highlighted the retroactive payments, to which Musk responded, "There are some accounts with over $20k available to be claimed!" He added, "Someone could claim their money, delete their account & never return. Totally up to them."
In another tweet, Musk announced that creators will "soon also be paid for ads appearing when others view your profile page, approximately doubling payouts."
Twitter issued its first round of payments last week with many creators posting their earnings on the platform. Kranssenstein posted that he had received $25,000 from the program.
Krassenstien said in his post, "I personally see this as a major step in differentiating Twitter from other platforms." He continued, "Instead of allowing massive corporations to use your data from your posts to make themselves money, Twitter will share the money they make with the creator."
"This appears to be just one of many steps that will be taken by Twitter to empower the poster/creator," he concluded.
Musk was accused of "bribing" influencers to stay on the platform by Washington Post journalist, Taylor Lorenz, who has not had the same "privileged access" she had before Musk purchased the platform.
According to Twitter's website, to be eligible for payments a user has to "Be subscribed to Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations, Have at least 15M impressions on your posts within the last 3 months," and have a Stripe account set up.
Elon announced the new program in February. In a tweet, he said, "Starting today, Twitter will share ad revenue with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads." The website elaborated, "We’re expanding our creator monetization offering to include Ads Revenue Sharing for creators. This means that creators can get a share in ad revenue starting in the replies to their posts. This is part of our effort to help people earn a living directly on Twitter."
They added that creators can apply to the Ads Revenue Sharing program and Creator Subscriptions independently.
