During his opening statements in his Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee hearing, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. vowed to implement President Donald Trump's policies regarding abortion as well as hire pro-life staffers at the Department of Health and Human Services, of which he has been nominated to lead.

Senator Tim Scott (R-SC) asked Kennedy, "You and I had a serious conversation about the importance of life. And I'm a pro-life Christian as you know, and you said that you assured me that your deputies were going to be pro-life. Is that still the case?"

Kennedy answered, saying that he would implement Trump's policies on abortion and added, that "every abortion is a tragedy." When pressed on the topic again by Scott about whether Kennedy would be hiring pro-life staffers at HHS, Kennedy responded, "Yes, I am."

The nominee also said that he would be supporting Trump's policies when it comes to mifepristone, a chemical abortion pill, when he was speaking to Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WS). “With mifepristone, President Trump has not chosen a policy, and I will implement his policy," Kennedy told Baldwin.

During the hearing, Kennedy was also grilled on his stance on vaccines by several lawmakers. The topic came up in his Wednesday hearing as well, and he addressed the topic in his opening statements on Thursday.

"News reports and many in the hearing yesterday have claimed that I'm anti-vaccine and anti-industry. Well, I'm neither. I'm pro-safety. I'm pro-good science. I worked for 40 years to raise awareness about mercury and other toxics in fish, and nobody called me anti-fish," Kenndy said at the beginning of the hearing.

He later added, "We will make sure our tax dollars support healthy foods. It will scrutinize the chemical additives to our food supply. We'll remove the financial conflicts of interest from the agencies. We'll create an honest, unbiased, science-driven HHS — accountable to the President, to the Congress, and to the American people. We will reverse the chronic disease epidemic, and put the nation back on the road to good health."
