Players kneeling during the national anthem before their Major League Soccer game in Texas last night got booed by spectators.
The game was between FC Dallas and Nashville FC and took place in the town of Frisco TX. Just over 5000 people were in attendance at the game, due to social distancing guideline. The game ended up being won by Nashville 1-0. The two teams are slated to compete again in four more days.
The MLS is just getting back into the swing of things after having to suspend their season back on March 12 due to the pandemic, according to CBC. The rest of the league has been playing for the past month, but the Dallas and Nashville teams had to wait more time due to various players on both teams testing positive for the virus.
Dallas player Nick Cannon called the booing of the patriotic fans "disgusting."
"It hurts me because I love our fans, I love this club, and I want to see the support that the league has given us, that everyone has given us, from our fans," he said.
It has become popular for professional athletes of all sorts all around the world to kneel instead of standing during the national anthem that is played before games, ever since the death of George Floyd in police custody.
The practice has sparked dissent and discord all throughout pro sports, and at times anger and rejection on the part of fans. Some people feel that the practice is disrespectful, others feel it is the proper way to protest bad police actions all across the country.
These days, it is common for players and even coaches to be wearing Black Lives Matter t-shirts throughout the event. The anthem wasn’t even played during the games of the opening tournament, due to multiple requests to not do so.
