One lawyer said, "There are a small number of people who I have told, 'Look, you should take a vacation outside of the country around the time of inauguration, just to see what happens.'"
According to NBC News, after Trump's victory over Harris, some long-time and senior-level staff at the DOJ as well as the FBI are nervous that Trump appointments such as Gaetz at the DOJ could go after them legally. The selection of Gaetz has specifically made them nervous about possible cases against them, per the outlet. Some FBI officials were "shell-shocked" by Trump's election win.
Trump has long promised to "drain the swamp," and there has been no shortage of what many have called "lawfare" against him leading up to the 2024 election, leading some to believe he will seek retribution. The multiple cases against the president-elect have begun to destabilize leading up to and after he won his decisive victory against Harris.
One of the lawyers who is planning on being an asset to those that the Trump administration may go after includes Mark Zaid, a national security attorney who has defended whistleblowers in the past. He told Politico, “There are a small number of people who I have told, ‘Look, you should take a vacation outside of the country around the time of inauguration, just to see what happens.'"
"Just go on a routine vacation and see what plays out come Jan. 20, 21st, 22nd," the lawyer added. When Zaid was asked about how "Democrats opened up this can of worms by prosecuting Trump" he responded, admitting that the "New York City case was politically based" as well as the "Georgia case." The sentencing of Trump in the falsified business records case brought forth by Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg that saw a conviction of Trump on what many have called a "novel legal theory" has also been pushed back repeatedly in light of the election.
Additionally, there is the Mar-a-Lago raid from the FBI that has been brought under heavy scrutiny and Special Counsel Jack Smith has already sought for a pause on the case with reported plans to resign before Trump takes office. Despite this, one FBI agent who has contacted his lawyer claimed to the outlet that "everything we did was above board" regarding the FBI's treatment of Trump.
