A man who works for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was arrested last week on suspicion of sexual abuse of very young children.
Robert Alexander Smith, 65, who was preparing to retire from his position as a supervisory intelligence analyst for the FBI, is charged with molesting multiple children. One of his five alleged victims says she was only 6 or 7 years old when the abuse took place.
An investigation by the county sheriff’s office that included interviews with up to five minor girls who said they were victims of Smith led to his arrest at his home in Stansbury Park, Utah and booked into the Tooele County Jail.
He is now facing four 1st-degree felony counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, four class-A misdemeanor counts of lewdness involving a child, and two class-B misdemeanor counts of lewdness.
The investigation began in June when one girl told a trusted adult that Smith had touched her sexually, multiple times, two years before she spoke up about it. She said she was 6 or 7 years old at the time. An affidavit of probable cause was then filed in 3rd District Court in Tooele, when the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possible sex offense case that involved several girls.
The other girls who came forward were interviewed and recorded at a Children’s Advocacy Center. They each reportedly became emotional and started crying when asked if anything inappropriate had happened with Smith. All of them reported inappropriate touching, some included genital touching.
"Mr. Smith occupied a position of special trust as it pertains to the victims in this case," documents state, who described Smith as a caregiver with authority over the girls.
The FBI released a statement regarding the allegations and arrest of Smith: "We are aware of the arrest of an FBI employee. The FBI takes allegations of misconduct very seriously. As such, the incident has been referred to the FBI’s Internal Affairs Section. We cannot comment further on an ongoing personnel matter."
