The "School Massacres Discussion" server was flagged by a fellow user and sent to the FBI in November
It has been revealed that a Discord server dedicated to discussing school shootings to which the 17-year-old who carried out an attack at Perry High School was a member had been brought to the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation weeks before.
While the server was shut down prior to the January 4 attack, the FBI reportedly failed to take action to ensure none of the members actually went on to act out any of the things they had talked about.
According to NBC News report, the "School Massacres Discussion" server was flagged by a fellow user and sent to the FBI in November. An agent reached out to the user for more information, but when additional screenshots were provided, they never heard anything back.
It has also been revealed that the aforementioned account sent messages in a Discord group right before the attack. Via his online alias, Butler told his friends he was "f*cking nervous" and "in the bathroom gearing up." He also posted a short video from the bathroom to TikTok under the "tooktoomuch" account.
Just minutes later, Butler complained about the presence a black fellow student.
"There's a n*gger in the bathroom," he wrote. "I need him to leave so I can assemble my guns."
Moments after telling friends on the social media app that he was "ready for what's to come," Dylan Butler went on to kill one 6th-grader, and wound four other students, the school's principal, and two staff members before turning the gun on himself.
In a statement, Discord offered its condolences to the victims of the attack.
"Our deepest sympathies are with the victims, their families, and the community in Perry, Iowa following yesterday's horrific shooting," a spokesperson wrote. "Discord has a zero-tolerance policy against content that glorifies violence and violent extremism, which is reflected in our Community Guidelines. We took immediate action against the suspect and his content, and are currently cooperating with law enforcement to assist them in their continuing investigation."
