The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed multiple search warrants on Wednesday at the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) headquarters and the home of its top official, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho. The raids are part of an ongoing investigation, according to reports.

The FBI and Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed to Fox 11 that federal agents served court-authorized warrants at Carvalho's private residence in San Pedro and the LAUSD main office in downtown Los Angeles. Video footage and images captured federal vehicles parked outside of these locations. FBI agents were seen entering the properties and exiting with boxes of unknown items.

Specific details of the investigation have not yet been released. The affidavit currently remains under seal.

Alberto Carvalho, who has been the superintendent of the nation's second-largest school district since 2022, was sued last year by former superintendent Austin Beutner and student plaintiffs on claims that Carvalho allegedly misused $76.7 million in Proposition 28 funds. According to the lawsuit, the LAUSD allegedly violated the law by using the funds intended for music and arts programs to replace existing budgets instead of expanding the programs. It also claims the district failed to meet the 80 percent new staff hiring mandate.

Additionally, the Department of Justice Civil Rights Division joined a lawsuit last week that alleges the LAUSD has been discriminating against white students under its desegregation policy. The district's move to use race-based classifications to label schools, such as predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, and other non-Anglo (PHBAO), has resulted in white and Middle Eastern students being denied equal access to benefits, the federal suit claims.

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom recently recognized Carvalho for his achievements, citing academic improvements for Black and Hispanic students in the LAUSD.
