Vice President Kamala Harris, after saying that she would shoot someone if they broke into her house, is backtracking. A top aide for the Democratic nominee in the 2024 election now claim she was only "joking" when she made the comments in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

According to the Telegraph, after Harris made the comment to Oprah, "If someone breaks into my house, they’re getting shot," in an interview with the television host, Harris campaign adviser Keisha Lance Bottoms said in response to the viral moment, “It was a joke, and she knew that we would still be talking about it today."

The aide added, "I think it‘s important that people know that the vice president respects the right to bear arms, that she supports the Second Amendment, but she wants responsible gun ownership, and she wants our communities to be safe."

Harris has previously made comments in full support of mandatory gun confiscation programs, where the government would buy certain types of firearms off the market. However, now she has lessened her rhetoric against 2nd Amendment rights. On Thursday, Harris told Oprah, "Here’s my point, Oprah, I’m not trying to take everyone’s guns away." She then made the point that she was a gun owner but spoke about her support of "red flag laws" as well as banning what she called "weapons of war." These would include what the Democrats have labeled as "assault weapons," however, the term does not have a clear definition.

One paper published by the Department of Justice in 2003 classifies an assault weapon as a “civilian, semiautomatic version of a military weapon.” One gun for example that would fall into this category is the AR-15.

She added that the gun restrictions she is in favor of are "common sense" solutions. Her boss, President Joe Biden, in his time in public service, has passed several restrictions on guns and firearms, such as a rule to impose stricter background checks on those who purchase guns under the age of 21. Biden has also been in favor of gun bans on "assault weapons."
