Former Democrat presidential candidate Dean Phillips has called for New York Governor Kathy Hochul to pardon Donald Trump "for the good of the country." The call comes after Trump's conviction on Thursday.

Rep. Phillips (D-MN), who ran a short presidential bid against President Joe Biden in the primaries took to social media to make his call for the New York governor to pardon Trump and had a few words against the 45th president as well.

"Donald Trump is a serial liar, cheater, and philanderer, a six-time declarer of corporate bankruptcy, an instigator of insurrection, and a convicted felon who thrives on portraying himself as a victim," Dean wrote in a social media post. "Governor Kathy Hochul should pardon him for the good of the country."

The post came down on Friday and soon received both praise and backlash from different political stripes. On Saturday, he then wrote a follow-up to his original post, saying, "You think pardoning is stupid? Making him a martyr over a payment to a porn star is stupid. (Election charges are entirely different.)"

"It’s energizing his base, generating record sums of campaign cash, and will likely result in an electoral boost," Phillips added. After the conviction on Thursday, the donations page to Trump's campaign crashed due to the traffic going to the website and within a day, the campaign had raised nearly $35 million in small-donor donations.

Phillips, who called the Democratic Party "completely delusional" during the campaign, went to some Trump rallies in order to interact with his supporters to get their perspective and is seen as a more moderate representative in Congress.

As of early Saturday afternoon, Hochul had not responded to the request online and did not immediately respond to a request for comment when Fox News reached out for comment on the matter.
