In October 2021, Twitter released a report detailing the algorithmic amplification of politics on the platform. It showed that in Canada, Conservative and Liberal politicians were amplified 167 percent and 43 percent, respectively.

On Thursday, former Trudeau Cabinet minister Catherine McKenna cited the discrepancy as she called on Liberals to censor political opponents.

"BONKERS," Mckenna wrote, pointing out that according to the aforementioned report, "the most powerful discrepancy between amplification of right & left on Twitter was in Canada."

She demanded that Twitter reveal which Conservative politicians and outlets the algorithm was "amplifying," and then proceeded to urge Liberal MPs to "regulate them."

McKenna added that she was "personally furious about insanity of Twitter algorithms," but also wanted to call Twitter out for allowing "right wing politicians & outlets to mount attacks on real people & to discredit real issues."

She called on Twitter to reveal whether any of its senior Canadian employees were "supporting any Conservative leadership campaigns and/or are members of the Conservative Party."

McKenna, a former Liberal MP for Ottawa Centre, served as Minister of Infrastructure and Communities before officially retiring from politics in June 2021.

Just under a year later, she was selected by the United Nations to chair a panel on climate change, a cause about which she is passionate.

McKenna became the centre of a controversy in 2020 after footage emerged of her eating dog and bribing her way into a cockfight on the Indonesian island of Flores in 1995.

Despite calls from animal rights activists for her to apologize, McKenna refused, instead calling out Conservatives for attacking her over a 25-year-old video.
