New footage has shown the moments leading up to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shooting a Venezuelan illegal immigrant on Sunday in Austin, Texas. The illegal immigrant, identified as Wilber Perez, was injured in the shooting and was facing final removal orders.
The footage was obtained by journalist Savanah Hernandez from an Austin security company. The footage is from 12:45 pm local time, with the shooting occurring around 10 minutes later.
Perez was seen speeding by the camera in a vehicle, with two DHS vehicles in pursuit with lights and sirens blaring.
Perez, 28, had been in the middle of dlivering a DoorDash order at the time of the shooting, per ABC News. He claimed that leading up to the shooting, an “SUV rode next to him and tried to hit him.”
Perez said through an interpreter, “He thought it was like an aggressive driver. Turns out it was not. He asked the ICE officer if he could please pull over so that they could detain him. They said ‘no’ and they side-swiped him. He did a U-Turn to try and find a spot to park so that he could go with them and they basically ran into him and then shot him.” The footage shows that DHS was in pursuit.
He claimed that the vehicles had only turned their lights and sirens on after they had side-swiped him. Hernandez noted of the footage, “It also looks like the vehicle has zero damage at this point.”
Rioting broke out following the shooting, with left-wing agitators rushing to the intersection where the shooting took place and shutting it down. Some agitators waved Mexican flags, threw objects at police and residents, and did burnouts in their cars.
Perez was hospitalized after the shooting and was released to ICE. He is being held in a South Texas ICE processing center awaiting deportation.
