In a letter dated January 20, Maxwell’s attorneys said she has not changed her position regarding her Fifth Amendment rights.
Ghislaine Maxwell is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in a closed-door deposition on February 9, according to Committee Chair James Comer.
The announcement that the Epstein co-conspirator will appear before the committee came as lawmakers considered contempt measures against Bill and Hillary Clinton, both of whom have defied subpoenas as part of the committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
"I agree we need to hear from Ghislaine Maxwell," Comer said. "We've been trying to get her in for a deposition.”
Maxwell’s deposition will be conducted virtually and behind closed doors. She is currently serving a 20-year sentence at a federal prison camp in Texas after being sentenced in 2022. Comer said Maxwell is expected to plead the Fifth.
"Her lawyers have been saying that she's going to plead the Fifth, but we have nailed down a date, Feb. 9, where Ghislaine Maxwell will be deposed by this committee. Now, her lawyers have made it clear that she's going to plead the Fifth. I hope she changes her mind, because I want to hear from her,” Comer said.
In a letter dated January 20, Maxwell’s attorneys said she has not changed her position regarding her Fifth Amendment rights. The lawyers also requested that the deposition be delayed until her legal proceedings are fully resolved.
“Put plainly, proceeding under these circumstances would serve no other purpose than pure political theater and a complete waste of taxpayer monies,” the attorneys said. “The Committee would obtain no testimony, no answers, and no new facts.”
Maxwell’s legal team has also said she would be willing to testify publicly if she were granted clemency.
"For months, Ghislaine Maxwell has defied the subpoena ordering her to testify to the Oversight Committee. After pressure from Oversight Democrats, Chairman Comer has finally decided to call her in to testify," said Democrat Representative Robert Garcia, the committee’s ranking member. "But let's be clear: the coverup is continuing. She has gotten special treatment from the DOJ for months. Let's end the cover-up now.”
