They denounced in a letter Rep. James Comer's (R-KY) efforts to have them appear for the deposition, according to the New York Times.
“Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences,” the Clintons wrote in a lengthy letter to Comer. “For us, now is that time.”
They called the effort to have them deposed “invalid and legally unenforceable” in the 8-page letter. This comes after Comer has relentlessly tried to have them testify in the case surrounding Epstein. They may now be held in contempt of Congress as a result of refusing to testify for the House Oversight Committee.
Ahead of the refusal, the House Oversight Committee had posted to X, "No one is above the law," when announcing the deposition.
The Clinton's letter, among marking their refusal to comply with the request to testify in the House investigation, were critical of the Trump administration over Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations going on around the country, and directed attention to the shooting of Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE agent when she ran her car into the official, who shot her in response.
"People have been seized by masked federal agents from their homes, their workplaces, and the streets of their communities. Students and scientists with visas permitting them to study and work here have been deported without due process. The people who laid siege to the U.S. Capitol have been pardoned and called heroes," the Clintons wrote in the letter.
"Agencies vital to the country's national security have been dismantled. Universities, media companies, and law firms have been subjected to threats to their funding, access, and licensing unless they made concessions and surrendered their right to constitutionally protected free speech. American troops have been deployed on the streets of our towns and cities. The Justice Department has been used as a weapon, at the direction of the President, to pursue political opponents. And most recently and searingly, an ICE agent killed an unarmed mother only days ago," they added.
Comer had set a deadline for the Clintons to respond before Tuesday, Bill was set to be deposed on Tuesday, and Hillary on Wednesday. However, just hours before the deadline, they sent the letter to refuse to make the appearance.
