A 17-year-old high school student from Hamilton, Ontario has been fired from a co-placement at a hospital after he made an okay sign, according to the Toronto Star.

Her employer alleged that the okay sign was a symbol of white supremacy. The student published a picture where he was using the sign on social media.

This happened after her school noticed the photo online and called the student into a meeting. "They said it was a racist sign. I didn’t know. I was accused of being a racist."

"I wasn’t given much information except I was being kicked out of my co-op," she added.

The hospital has since said that a member of the community reported the student to the hospital.

The student who published the photo was in grade 12. She said "it wasn’t meant to be racist and it wouldn’t happen again. I thought it means ‘OK.’ Like a thumbs-up sign."

The student told the Hamilton Spectator that she was deeply upset when she was fired. "It was great. I was really excited. I really wanted to do that co-op," said the student.

She worked in customer service at the hospital and helped with general administration.
