US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged a detainer against a Haitian illegal immigrant accused of murdering his co-worker at a meat processing plant in Michigan. Valmir Djempsley, 20, allegedly skewered 21-year-old Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez to death during a "barbaric" stabbing attack, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said

ICE asked the state of Michigan not to release Djempsley from jail without being notified, according to DHS. The fatal incident occurred on June 30 at the Clemens Food Group pork processing plant in Coldwater. The two worked together in the loin boning production area, according to reports.

"This illegal alien barbarically stabbed his coworker to death," said Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. "This murderer was released into American communities by the Biden Administration. If it weren't for the reckless open border policies of the Biden Administration, this criminal never would have been in our country in the first place and his victim would still be alive. We have lodged a detainer asking Michigan to not release this dangerous criminal from jail without notifying ICE."

Court documents state that there was an altercation between Djempsley and Chavez moments before the killing. Chavez was reportedly in possession of one of Djempsley's assigned knives, which angered him. Witnesses reported observing Djempsley chasing Chavez around the plant before stabbing him in the back.

Djempsley told authorities that Chavez "head-butted" him during the argument. Witnesses could not corroborate Djempsley's claims. Chavez died at the scene.

The Haitian national unlawfully entered the US through Texas in 2024. He was captured and then released into the country by the Biden administration, DHS said.

Djempsley pleaded not guilty on July 1 to murder charges. He is being held in custody at the Branch County jail and faces life in prison if convicted.
