US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were physically attacked by an agitator during Friday operations in Salem, Oregon. The unknown assailant grabbed a federal officer by the neck and threw a punch, video shows.

This comes as ICE increases targeted immigration enforcement operations in the sanctuary state, the first notable increase since around this time last year.

The incident occurred around 2 pm on October 9 at 3935 Silverton Road NE in Salem, according to video uploaded to ICEOUT.org

Video footage shows ICE officers being surrounded by a group of anti-ICE agitators, some of whom arrived carrying Mexican flags.

The assailant jumped on top of the hood of a federal vehicle and blocked the windshield with his body, forcing the driver to come to a halt. An ICE officer exited a separate vehicle and attempted to remove the individual. The assailant then went in for the attack, according to the video.

As the officer was trying to remove him, the agitator placed his right arm around the back of the ICE officer's neck. The officer blocked the assailant who then used his left hand to dig his nails into the officer's shoulder. The attacker then threw a punch at the officer's face. The officer dodged the blow, according to the video.

Additional ICE officers rushed into the scene to assist their colleague. The assailant continued the attack but backed off when an officer deployed mace, striking the attacker's face.

Other demonstrators at the scene were swarming federal vehicles, appearing to interfere with operations, video shows.

The area where the incident occurred has a heavy Hispanic/Latino population. Salem, home to the state capitol, is Democrat-run city located about an hour south of Portland.

ICE officers did not receive help from local or state law enforcement agencies during the altercation due to Oregon's sanctuary policies, which prohibit local and state police from assisting with federal immigration-related matters.

The assailant was not immediately taken into custody.
