"You’re lying. There was no attempt to run the officer over and no ICE agents appear to be hurt. Get out of our city."
A woman was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on Wednesday after she attempted to run over an agent in Minneapolis. Rep Ilhan Omar, who represents Minneapolis in Congress, claimed that this did not happen, despite posting video evidence of the incident showing the attempt.
Omar wrote in response to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security on the matter, "You’re lying. There was no attempt to run the officer over and no ICE agents appear to be hurt. Get out of our city." Video she included in the post showed the moment the woman, who was driving a red SUV, reversed her car despite orders to get out, and putting it in drive as an ICE agent was positioned in front of it. As she drove forward, an agent fired.
DHS said, "ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism. An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots."
Another angle of the incident showed the moment the agent opened fire, with the woman driving toward the agent.
During a press conference following the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that it was "bullsh*t" that the shooting was carried out in self-defense, saying that he’s "seen the video myself." He continued, "this was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed."
Frey later said that it did not appear to him "that the individual is trying to ram anybody," just after saying that an investigation still needs to be conducted into the matter.
Human Events Daily host Jack Posobiec wrote, "She appears to be using her car to interfere in ICE operations and this is why ICE engaged her in the first place." Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said during the press conference that the suspect was a "middle-aged white woman" who had been "in her car, and it appears then blocking the street because of the presence of federal law enforcement, which is obviously something that has been happening not just in Minneapolis, but around the country."
