An illegal immigrant convicted of child sex crimes in Maryland has been apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement weeks after he was released from custody by a Baltimore County judge. Raul Calderon-Interiano, 25, was sentenced to six years behind bars after being found guilty of a fourth-degree sex offense and second-degree assault involving a minor. However, Judge Jan Marshall Alexander decided to eliminate the prison portion of the punishment.
ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations division had asked the court to hold Calderon-Interiano in custody, however that request was not granted and he was set free. He was re-arrested by ERO agents near his home on May 29, and will remain under the watch of ICE pending his removal from the country.
According to ICE, Calderon-Interiano first entered the United States near Laredo, Texas "without being inspected, admitted or paroled by a US immigration official" as a minor in June 2014, and was eventually moved into the custody of a sponsor in Maryland in November of that year. In October 2015, an immigration judge ordered that he be sent back to his home country of Guatemala.
On January 23, 2023, Calderon-Interiano was arrested by police in Baltimore and charged with a slew of child sex crimes. The immigrant detainer was filed by the local ERO that same day. In April of this year, despite being ordered to register as a Tier 1 sex offender, he was released.
"Raul Calderon-Interiano was convicted of sex crimes against a local child and posed a significant threat to other Maryland children," ERO Baltimore acting Field Office Director Matthew Elliston said in a statement. "We will not tolerate the residents of our communities to be victimized by unlawfully present sex offenders. The women and men of ERO Baltimore will continue to prioritize the safety of our public by aggressively arresting and removing noncitizen predators from our neighborhoods."
According to FOX45, Baltimore County ignored around 70 percent of all immigration detainers filed by ICE in Fiscal Year 2023.
