Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, an illegal immigrant from Mauritania was found dead in "an apparent suicide attempt by hanging," per the Daily Mail. Jail staff were conducting a routine check in the jail's medical facility and found him dead in his cell, Cook County Sheriff's officials said of the incident. Staff attempted life-saving measures and took him to a hospital, but Abdallahi was pronounced dead.
Although authorities claimed there was no evidence of foul play in his death, the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force will conduct an investigation as well. On Oct. 26, Abdallahi was taken into custody after reportedly shooting a Jewish man who was walking to synagogue in Chicago, Illinois.
When officers, as well as first responders, showed up in response, he was caught on video yelling "Allahu Akbar" as he then engaged in a shootout with law enforcement. Abdallahi was injured after being shot, and the officers were left unscathed from the incident. In the process of the shootout, Abdallahi's gunfire struck a Chicago Fire Department ambulance coming to the scene. The suspect was hospitalized in the aftermath of the shooting but later released to jail.
Prosecutors alleged in the case, prior to his demise, that Abdallahi was planning for a larger attack. In a court hearing, they presented evidence that Abdallahi had mapped out the locations to several different Jewish schools as well as community centers prior to shooting the victim.
