Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison called the incident "a parent’s worst nightmare."
The crash happened around 4:42 pm near North Harrison Boulevard and West Ada Street, per KIVI, when the driver, later identified as Elvin Ramos-Caballero, reportedly hit the girl while turning north in his pickup truck. Paramedics rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, but she died later that evening, police confirmed.
Boise Police said Ramos-Caballero stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. During a standard records check through the National Crime and Information Center (NCIC), officers discovered an outstanding federal warrant connected to ICE. The department then contacted immigration authorities, who arrived and took Ramos-Caballero into custody.
Police say no additional charges have been filed at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
A preliminary report indicates the pedestrian had been walking west on Ada Street and stopped at the corner of the intersection when the crash happened. Traffic was reportedly backed up along Harrison Boulevard, and both the driver and the pedestrian entered the intersection at the same time as Ramos-Caballero attempted to make his turn.
Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison called the incident “a parent’s worst nightmare.“
"Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, friends, and her community at large,” he said, adding that more information will be released as the investigation continues.
The Ada County Coroner’s Office will identify the victim once her family has been notified.
Boise’s Crash Reconstruction Team and Violent Crime Unit detectives are continuing to process the scene and review witness statements.
Police said Ramos-Caballero remains in ICE custody, but local investigators are still determining whether additional state or local charges will be filed.
