Illegal immigrant who attacked cop in Times Square sentenced to one year in jail—NYPD union outraged

An illegal immigrant from Venezuela is going to jail for 364 days for kicking a New York Police Department (NYPD) cop during a Jan. 27 Times Square brawl. The police union says the sentence is way too light, the New York Post reports.

Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, said nothing but smirked when he heard the sentence after he had pleaded guilty to second-degree assault last month to the brawl between police officers and a gang of illegal immigrants. Fully 75 percent of arrests in midtown Manhattan are illegal immigrants.

The police union says the sentence doesn’t send a strong enough signal that cops are not on the street to be kicked around by illegal immigrants. Police Benevolent Association chief Patrick Hendry said Gomez-Izquiel should have more time in prison to contemplate his actions.

“364 days is not enough. This individual should be behind bars a lot longer. If you attack a New York City police officer, you should stay behind bars,” Hendry said outside the courtroom. The judge suggested that Gomez could get a lot more if he violates the law again.

“Mr. Gomez, if you get arrested again in New York state, you will be a predicate felon, and you will wind up upstate,” Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Laura Ward warned Gomez-Izquiel, in sending him to jail. Gomez-Izquiel is the second member of the gang to be sentenced. Kevlin Servita Arocha pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced to time served.

The altercation took place outside of a shelter for illegal immigrants on West 42nd Street near Seventh Avenue, Manhattan prosecutors said. There are five other defendants whose cases are still open: Ulises Bohorquez, Yohenry Brito, Wilson Juarez, Yorman Reveron and Edgarlis Vegas. All five are scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Illegal immigrants populate shelters in NYC that range from former city government facilities to fine hotels. Marriott International is suing one of its NYC properties that is now used as a migrant shelter.

Since the Biden-Harris border crisis began immediately following President Joe Biden’s inauguration, NYC, like many large urban centers in the US, has provided illegal immigrants with a variety of taxpayer-provided largesse. NYC is supplying free airline tickets to illegal immigrants to fly anywhere in the US. The city turned a high school over to illegal immigrants and has offered prepaid debit cards as well.
