Derek Sloan, Independent MP for Hastings Lennox and Addington, hopes to appeal to Canadians with his new political party, "True North." According to Global News, he is in the early stages of making the party official.

"I think Canadians are disenfranchised with the current political landscape, and I’m hoping to excite Canadians about politics and about Canada and to really get people happy again about Canada and hopeful," said Sloan.

Elections Canada has stated that they are working with Sloan to make sure all requirements under the Canada Elections Act are respected. Once that is done, Sloan's "True North" vision for Canadian politics would be approved.

Sloan has been travelling outside his riding – particularly going around Western Canada to promote his new movement. However, Sloan's actions have drawn criticism from some, including Conservative senator Hugh Segal.

"If he’ll be more to the right, he’ll obviously be taking some votes away from the Conservatives at that far right-winged edge in his constituency and other constituencies where there may be candidates for his new party," said Segal.

Even though Sloan's new political party "True North" is gaining notice in Western Canada, his plans to run in his own riding has not changed.
