Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has predicted that President Donald Trump’s administration will “collapse” within the next 30 days due to a decline in public approval.

Speaking to Mediaite’s Dan Abrams, Carville claimed that Trump is facing a significant drop in popularity and that his administration will begin to unravel due to a loss of public support.

“I believe that this administration, in less than 30 days, is in the midst of a massive collapse and particularly a collapse in public opinion,” Carville said.

“What I have said very publicly is that Democrats need to play possum. This whole thing is collapsing,” he continued. “It doesn't need Elizabeth Warren and somebody screaming to pacify some progressive advocacy groups in Washington, which, by the way, I wish these people were just useless. They're actually worse than useless, that they're detrimental.”

Carville argued that if Democrats “lay back,” Republicans will struggle to pass their legislative agenda. He has also suggested that Democrats should “do nothing” regarding Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has been aggressively working to cut government spending and workforce numbers.

“What I think they should do is what we call in rural America, play possum. Just let it go,” Carville said on MSNBC last week.”Don't get in the way of it. Or as we like to say, don't just stand there, do nothing. Let this germinate… We don't need to get in front of it. This freight train is moving. Let's just get out of the way and then we're gonna have time.”

While Trump’s approval rating has declined slightly since taking office, his numbers remain higher than at any point during his first term, according to the Daily Mail. Polls have placed his approval rating in the low 50s to high 40s in his first month back in office.

DOGE has been moving rapidly to implement its agenda, likely to take advantage of Trump’s early approval ratings and preempt obstacles such as declining public support or the 2026 midterms. Despite this, Trump has continued to express strong support for Musk’s efforts and has encouraged him to intensify government spending cuts and reduce federal bureaucracy.
