“Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.”
Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) confirmed that a reelected President Donald Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if faced with the decision. “I think he would. He said that explicitly that he would,” the Ohio senator said Sunday on NBC News’ Meet the Press.
Vance emphasized throughout the Meet the Press interview that Trump and the Republican Party believe the issue of abortion is one that is best decided at the state level rather than being imposed by the federal government. “If California wants to have a different abortion policy from Ohio, then Ohio has to respect California, and California has to respect Ohio,” Vance said.
“Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.”
On Friday, Trump posted on Truth Social: “My Administration will be great for women and their reproductive rights."
Democrats continue to suggest that Trump would press for a Constitutional ban on abortion or also try to limit the use of birth control. "He and his allies would limit access to birth control, ban medication abortion, and enact a nationwide abortion ban with or without Congress,” Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris said in her Thursday acceptance speech at the DNC,” Politico noted.
Planned Parenthood offered free abortions and vasectomies at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago last week -- and filled all appointments. That organization has been caught on video offering aborted body parts for sale. In another abortion moment at the DNC, Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) wished rape upon Vance’s family, with the comment coming while discussing the topic of abortion.
During Meet the Press interview that ranged from abortion to tariffs, Vance refused to recant his “childless cat ladies” quip that has emboldened conservatives and infuriated liberals. Vance said he doesn’t regret making the remark.
"I’m going to say things from time to time that people disagree with,” Vance said. “I’m a real person. I’m going to make jokes, I’m going to say things sarcastically. I have a lot of regrets, Kristen [Welker], but making a joke three years ago is not at the top 10 of the list.”
